Redefining India’s Aviation Landscape

Kasstech Aerospace has been at the forefront of innovation in India’s aviation sector, making significant strides in pilot training, advanced aircraft maintenance, and UAV technology. From obtaining critical certifications to addressing the growing demand for skilled pilots, the company’s contributions are both timely and transformative. Vivek Saxena, Director, Kasstech Aerospace, shares insights into the company’s journey, key milestones, and ambitious vision for the future.

Milestones and Adaptability

Kasstech Aerospace’s journey began with a significant milestone: obtaining CAR 145 approval for its maintenance base from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). “This was a turning point for us,” Vivek recalls. “It took a year to secure the certification in 2021, marking a major step forward.” The company’s resilience was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought aviation operations to a standstill for 18 months. During this challenging period, Kasstech pivoted to supplying oxygen generators to address urgent market needs, demonstrating agility and adaptability.

Revolutionising Pilot Training

Pilot training remains a cornerstone of Kasstech’s operations. The company provides advanced aircraft like the Diamond DA40 and DA42 models to Flight Training Organisations (FTOs) and offers comprehensive maintenance support. “India’s aviation industry faces a massive shortage of pilots, with an estimated requirement of large number of pilots in the next five to seven years,” Vivek notes. Currently, only 2,000 pilots are trained annually, with 80% of Indian pilots receiving their training abroad.

Kasstech is committed to bridging this gap by enabling local FTOs to acquire and operate modern training aircraft. The DA40 and DA42 are particularly noteworthy for their safety features, including twin-engine configurations that allow continued flight even if one engine fails. Vivek elaborates, “This unique feature demonstrates the reliability of Diamond Aircraft. In the rare case of an engine shutdown, the aircraft can still climb and maintain stability with the other engine. It’s a testament to their superior engineering.” Additionally, these aircraft feature composite bodies, glass cockpits, and low operational costs, making them ideal for training programs. Vivek emphasises, “Although the initial investment in Diamond Aircraft is higher, their low running costs ensure better profitability for flying schools.”

Collaborations and Market Segmentation

Kasstech has forged strategic partnerships with global manufacturers like Austro Engine and Hirth Engine, catering to diverse market needs. Austro Engines serve the 50–180 HP range, suitable for civil aviation and larger UAVs, while Hirth focuses on the 10–50 HP segment for small UAVs and aerosports. “This segmentation enables us to address varied customer requirements while strenghtening our presence in both niche and mainstream markets,” says Vivek. He further explains that the complementary ranges of these manufacturers ensure that Kasstech can serve a wide spectrum of aviation needs, from parasailing vehicles to large UAVs.

Advancing Local Manufacturing

Kasstech is addressing gaps in the domestic aviation supply chain by localising the production of critical components like propellers and fuel systems. “India currently has no local manufacturers for certain key components, leading to long import waiting times,” Vivek explains. To overcome this, Kasstech is developing and certifying propellers, which are now under the final stages of certification. Vivek adds, “For example, a propeller ordered from abroad might take up to a year to arrive. Our efforts aim to drastically reduce this waiting period by creating a robust local supply base.” The same approach is being applied to fuel systems, with key models serving as a foundation for incremental advancements.

Unparalleled Maintenance Services

Kasstech’s CAR-certified Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility sets a benchmark for quality and efficiency. “Our engineers are factory-trained, and we strictly adhere to OEM procedures,” Vivek shares. By focusing exclusively on maintaining Diamond and Austro aircraft, Kasstech ensures specialised service standards that meet the highest industry benchmarks. Vivek further highlights that this exclusive focus allows them to maintain quality and efficiency unmatched by facilities handling multiple aircraft brands.

Innovation in Training Technologies

The company is also exploring advanced training technologies such as simulators to complement traditional flight training. While simulators involve high costs, they offer significant advantages by familiarising students with aircraft operations in a safe and controlled environment. Vivek notes, “Although the DGCA currently limits simulator training to 20 hours, these technologies are invaluable in preparing students for real-world scenarios. Students who have practiced on simulators transition to actual aircraft with confidence and familiarity.”

Focus on UAVs and Strategic Projects

Kasstech’s work with DRDO and HAL on UAV projects underscores its commitment to cutting-edge innovation. Although details remain confidential, these collaborations reflect the company’s expertise in advanced aerospace technology. Vivek shares, “We are working on projects involving Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) UAVs and other critical defence applications.” Additionally, Kasstech is advancing efforts to establish local assembly and certified engine testing facilities, with several components already under fabrication and certification.

Kasstech Aerospace is redefining aviation in India through its focus on pilot training, localisation, and innovation. With strategic partnerships, advanced technologies, and a commitment to quality, the company is well-positioned to meet the demands of a rapidly growing market. As Vivek concludes, “Our vision is to empower FTOs, drive innovation, and create a sustainable ecosystem that supports India’s aviation ambitions.”
