AIESL Secures Dual EASA Approvals, Advancing India’s MRO Hub Ambitions

In a significant leap toward global MRO excellence, AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) has secured two major certifications from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), reinforcing its status as India’s largest and most globally compliant MRO provider.
The developments include a revised EASA Part-145 A1 rating for AIESL’s Trivandrum facility, and an expanded engine maintenance scope at its Mumbai base, now including CFM LEAP-1B engine capabilities. These dual certifications represent a significant advancement in AIESL’s mission to expand its international MRO footprint and meet the growing demand for certified maintenance services across narrowbody airframes and next-generation engines.
EASA Part-145 A1 certification for Trivandrum: A strategic upgrade
The A1 rating awarded to the Trivandrum facility is an extension of AIESL’s existing EASA Approval EASA.145.0016, which was initially granted for its Mumbai base. This authorisation allows Trivandrum to conduct both base and limited line maintenance on Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft types, the workhorses of short- and medium-haul operations worldwide.
Under EASA Part-145 regulations, the A1 rating is the highest aircraft class category, applicable to aircraft with a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) exceeding 5,700 kg. With this approval, AIESL’s Trivandrum team can now offer EASA-compliant MRO services for narrowbody aircraft fleets, positioning itself to cater to international operators, lessors, and regional carriers seeking reliable heavy maintenance support in the South Asian corridor.

Located at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, the facility has long served as a key node in AIESL’s nationwide network. It is equipped with dedicated bays for both widebody and narrowbody aircraft, state-of-the-art tooling, and a trained technical workforce. The site’s capabilities include C-checks, structural repairs, avionics upgrades, landing gear replacements, and routine defect rectification. With the EASA certification in place, Trivandrum is now in a stronger position to attract third-party international business, particularly for lease transitions, pre-redelivery checks, and return-to-service tasks involving EU-registered aircraft.
Mumbai facility expands with LEAP-1B capability
In a parallel milestone, AIESL’s Mumbai base has received a significant scope extension under its B1 rating, introducing maintenance capabilities for the CFM LEAP-1B engine, the exclusive powerplant for the Boeing 737 MAX series. This comes in addition to the facility’s existing certifications for CFM56-7B, GEnx, and GE90 engines.

The LEAP-1B, developed by CFM International, represents the new generation of narrowbody propulsion systems. Known for its fuel efficiency, reduced carbon footprint, and lower maintenance demands, the engine is expected to dominate the global narrowbody market over the next two decades. With over 10,000 units currently in service or on order worldwide, the inclusion of LEAP-1B servicing marks a forward-looking capability shift for AIESL.
This capability will enable AIESL to support Indian carriers operating A320neo and 737 MAX aircraft, such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India, as well as foreign operators flying into India. It also allows the company to tap into the fast-growing engine MRO segment, which remains a high-margin component of the aftermarket value chain.
India as an emerging global MRO hub
These dual EASA approvals mark more than operational progress; they signify strategic readiness for India’s MRO ecosystem. With global lessors and airlines increasingly seeking cost-effective, certified MRO options outside of Europe and North America, India is positioning itself as a competitive alternative, particularly for narrowbody fleets and lease transition maintenance.
AIESL’s achievement supports the Indian government’s “Make in India” vision for aviation, which aims to transform the country into a preferred MRO destination for the APAC and Middle East markets.
