ATR 72-600F

ATR 72-600F is a groundbreaking aircraft, marking the arrival of the first purpose-built regional freighter designed specifically for modern cargo operations. Entering service in 2020, it leverages the latest advancements from the ATR-600 series, tailored for the unique demands of air transport. This aircraft has been engineered to provide a reliable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for regional cargo carriers, particularly as the demand for express e-commerce and logistics services continues to grow. Its design focuses on optimising cargo operations, ensuring that it meets the needs of both bulk and containerised cargo transportation.

ATR has extensive experience in the regional freighter market. There are currently around 130 converted ATR freighter aircraft in operation, representing one third of the global regional freighter fleet, and the brand-new ATR 72-600F incorporates the benefits of this knowledge to provide FedEx with a freighter that conforms to needed requirements.

Cargo Hold

The aircraft features a spacious cargo hold capable of accommodating various types of cargo, including bulk goods and industry-standard unit load devices (ULDs). The cargo hold is equipped with nine vertical nets, which can be adjusted to secure different types of cargo, and attachment points on the floor and lateral tracks that enable flexible loading to maximise efficiency and versatility. This design allows operators to fully utilise the available space, ensuring that the aircraft can transport maximum payloads effectively. The large cargo door and wide cross-section further enhance the aircraft’s loading capabilities, making it easy to handle oversized or irregularly shaped cargo.

Technology (Engine and Avionics)

The freighter is equipped with cutting-edge technology derived from the ATR-600 series, offering advanced performance and reliability for regional freight operations. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW127M engines, known for their fuel efficiency and low emissions, which contribute to the overall operational cost savings. The avionics suite is state-of-the-art, featuring a modern glass cockpit with intuitive controls that simplify operations and enhance situational awareness for the crew. The integration of these advanced systems ensures that the ATR 72-600F can operate efficiently in various environments, making it a versatile choice for cargo operators.

The cockpit sets a new standard in human-machine interaction, providing exceptional comfort and measurable efficiency improvements. Navigation, communication, and surveillance systems are seamlessly integrated into a modular avionics architecture. This cutting-edge design is both open and adaptable, enabling the future integration of new software and hardware functionalities independently.

Performance

Performance is a key strength of the ATR 72-600F, which is designed to meet the rigorous demands of regional cargo transport. The aircraft has a maximum structural payload of 9.2 tonnes, allowing it to carry substantial cargo loads over medium distances. Its gross cargo volume is 75 cubic meters, providing ample space for a wide range of cargo types, from packages to pallets and oversized items. The aircraft boasts a range of 1,030 nautical miles when carrying its maximum volumetric payload, making it well-suited for regional routes that require both capacity and efficiency. This combination of payload capacity and range ensures that the aircraft can meet the diverse needs of regional air freight operators. It can easily accommodate industry standard unit load devices and interline with larger freighters.

FedEx Express is reaping significant benefits from the ATR 72-600F’s unique 75m³ freight capacity. This purpose-built freighter features a streamlined fuselage, specifically optimized for cargo transport, and crafted by the turboprop manufacturer’s Italian shareholder, Leonardo, at their facilities in Naples.
