Compact Comfort: Inside the Innovative Airbus A220-100

Compact Comfort

Overview

Step into the world of the Airbus A220-100, the smallest yet one of the most impressive members of Airbus’ commercial aircraft family. Passengers cannot help but notice that this jetliner, designed specifically for the 100-135 seat market, combines efficiency and comfort in its own unique way. It is an incredibly nice feeling to board a single-aisle aircraft that feels like a widebody jet. The aircraft’s broad seats, ample overhead storage, and large windows, all provide an exceptional passenger experience.

The A220 Family stands out as the most efficient aircraft product line in its category. It offers significant environmental benefits, reduced fuel burn, and low noise levels, among others. These attributes make the A220 Family ideal for urban operations and noise-sensitive airports. Its new-generation engines contribute to the quietest interior in its class while also burning less fuel and reducing noise levels during airport operations.

Cabin

Getting inside the A220-100 is like entering a new era of air travel. The cabin is a favourite among passengers in the 100-150 seat category, receiving rave reviews for its roomy design, large windows, and spacious overhead bins. Designed to feel like a widebody aircraft, the cabin provides passengers with wide seats and generous personal space for a super comfortable experience.

The overhead bins, with the largest stowage capacity in their class, are easily accessible. Extra-large windows provide optimal viewing and an abundance of natural light, enhancing the travel experience. The A220-100 features wide seats over 18 inches, contributing to a comfortable personal space, and the newly-designed engines ensure a quiet cabin. The lower deck cargo hold allows for efficient stacking, resulting in significantly high usable volume.

The A220-100’s configurable cabin offers two flex zones, enabling operators to customise modular cabin elements tailored to their needs, including stowage areas and partitions, to deliver an exceptional passenger delight. The aircraft is recognised for its low noise levels, providing a quiet and comfortable environment during all phases of flight. The cabin management system offers crews easy, intuitive control of the aircraft’s interior environment, including entertainment offerings and mood lighting.

Technology (Engine and Avionics)

The A220-100 utilises advanced materials, including composites in the wings, empennage, and rear fuselage, reducing weight and increasing resistance to corrosion. These modern materials constitute more than 40 per cent of the aircraft’s primary structure, delivering weight savings for reduced fuel burn and reducing up to 25 per cent CO2 and up to 50 per cent NOx emissions. These materials reduce weight and enhance corrosion resistance, leading to better efficiency and lower maintenance costs.

At the core of the A220-100 are Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1500G geared turbofan engines. These engines are specifically designed for the A220 family and offer a 25 per cent lower fuel burn per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft. They also reduce NOx emissions by 50 per cent. The engines’ high bypass ratio keeps the aircraft quiet, making it airport-friendly. The A220 Family is ideal for hot-and-high and city-centre airport operations.  The variant A220-100 connects distant airports with its impressive range and best-in-class airfield performance.

A220 brings together state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials, and latest-generation technologies and engines, with a range of up to 6,390 km or 3,450nm and an impressive environmental scorecard. The aircraft is powered by two Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines, with a bypass ratio of 12:1 – among the highest of any turbofan engine in the world. These engines help the A220 use 25% less fuel per seat compared to older aircraft, while also cutting noise in half and reducing emissions. The advanced Health Management System (HMS) provides real-time supervision of the aircraft systems, enabling efficient maintenance and minimising unscheduled interruptions.

Performance

With a range of up to 3,450nm, the A220-100 offers the unique ability to fly both regional and longer-range missions with a single aircraft type. Its superior range capability, similar to that of large single-aisles, allows more destinations to be served while being more fuel-efficient and having lower operating costs per trip. This flexibility is valuable for airlines, allowing them to seamlessly adapt their schedules, meet demand, and open new routes at the lowest risk and with greater flexibility and efficiency.

The A220 family is the only in-production aircraft in its class capable of performing both steep approach and long-range operations, unlocking new route opportunities for airlines. It is the largest aircraft capable of operating in challenging airport environments, thanks to the A220 Family’s performance, efficiency, and built-in advantage.

The aircraft has also recently achieved 180-minute extended operations (ETOPS) certification, enabling A220 customers to start new direct non-limiting routings over water or in remote or underserved regions. The A220 benefits from a best-in-class HMS, designed to be Big Data ready. This system provides live supervision of the aircraft systems while flying, gathering real-time aircraft data and benefiting from automated wireless transmission on the ground. This enables efficient management of unscheduled maintenance to prevent interruptions or downtime and perform proactive maintenance through trend analysis.

The A220 has proven to successfully respond to customer needs to right-size their operations. By replacing regional aircraft and complementing larger single-aisles, like the A320 Family, operators are using the versatility of the A220 Family to optimise their fleet management with a low-risk solution. All this helps them fill the gap to grow fleets, open new route opportunities, and build new business models to meet market demands.
